Lawyers Turn Out To Honour Late Hauwa Shekarau At Valedictory Court Session

Lawyers from all over Nigeria trooped out in their numbers Tuesday afternoon, to pay their last respects to the recently demised Chairman of the Abuja Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Dr Hauwa Shekarau, at a Valedictory Court Session held in her honour by the Unity Bar.

The session which was presided over by the Acting Chief Judge of the FCT High Court, Hon. Justice Husseini Baba Yusuf, with Prince Adebiyi Adetosoye (NBA Abuja Branch Secretary) as Plaintiff’s Counsel, had in attendance judicial officers of various courts in Nigeria, Senior Advocates of Nigeria, senior lawyers and classmates of the deceased, a large number of young lawyers, members of the deceased’s family and the general public.

In his speech the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister for Justice, Abubakar Malami S.A.N., who was represented by a former Chairman of the Abuja branch of the NBA, Dr Princess F. Frank-Chukwuani  said, “I cannot help but express my sadness that Late Dr Hauwa Evelyn Shekarau’s home call was a bit untimely especially now when we most need her wisdom, advocacy, moral guidance and sterling leadership qualities.”

Also speaking at the event, the NBA President Olumide Akpata who was represented by Mazi Afam Osigwe S.A.N., stated that he admired Hauwa Shekarau for her sincerity, her quiet strength, her unwavering commitment to the Bar, and all that concerns it.

“Hauwa will always be remembered for the good she had done. Her commitment to the cause of justice and protection of women, weak and vulnerable members of the society will forever be remembered and greatly missed,” he said. READ HERE

Vice Chairman of the Abuja Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association who was also there with the entire Executive Committee of the branch which Shekarau chaired, Mrs Chioma Onyenucheya-Uko described the deceased as a woman of many parts.

“Dr. Hauwa Evelyn Shekarau, was of the finest specie of lawyers, an eloquent advocate who embodied and personified the best ideals of the legal profession. She was an epitome of discipline, industry, etiquette, brilliance and versatility.

“I can bet, and I am certain many in this courtroom will readily attest that Dr. Shekarau manifestly did her duty to humanity, in every office and position she held, whether it be NBA, FIDA, IPAS or any other, and now we trust that she does rest in peace. Indeed, our Madam Chair lived fully respected, and died sorely regretted!” READ HERE

Remarks were also made by Chief Ikechukwu Ezechukwu, SAN who represented the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN), and a representative of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), of which Dr Shekarau was a part.
